Post 1.3: The Plan

This post is inspired by Jerry’s post about his summer plan. I wanted to take a moment to really reflect on what my goal’s are for this summer, as a writer, a student, and a human being. My favorite part of this course is the encouragement to dig deep and bring ourselves out in our writing, blending the line between assignment and reflection. Thus, my goals as a writer and human should likewise be blended!

My overall theme for my papers is centered around my identity as a first generation Indian American — what the words mean individually, together, and the gap that separates them. My first paper discussed Hinglish and my relationship with my grandparents, and I’m not too sure where my next projects will go. I’m thinking of doing another form of media (perhaps a podcast) for WP2, asking other first-generation Americans about their experience. WP3 is where I’m really going to dive deep, using my experiences from the readings, WP1/2, and other research to help form a reflective experience. This topic has great significance to me and I still haven’t unpacked it much in my life, so there’s another goal for the summer!

Besides all this writing, I want to use this summer as a reset, and transition more into being an independent adult. I think this will help me be more in tune with understanding my identity, as I build my own habits and leave childhood behind me. This tangibly means waking up early, working out, cooking, etc. but intangibly means not taking my phone on walks so I can use that space to think, keeping a journal with ideas, and constantly writing down whatever I think about. I’m excited to do all of this, because I think it will not only make me a better writer but a better person. The tricky part is holding myself to the less tangible pieces, as there’s no easy way to track progress. But hey, maybe it isn’t about progress.
